AI-generated pictures purporting to show Nicolás Maduro in custody after his apprehension by the American authorities have garnered countless of impressions online.
How AI Images of Maduro Appeared Soon After
The first fake synthetic picture seemingly displaying him taken off a plane surfaced a brief time later. The picture was absent from any authoritative US channels; it was instead posted on the platform X by an account purporting to be an “AI video art enthusiast”.
We’ve checked the SynthID tool, which found the image was generated or edited with Google AI.
More AI-generated visuals were disseminated in the following period, purporting to present more angles of Maduro in custody. Visible identifying marks on the graphics reveal they came from an Instagram profile named ultravfx.
AI analysis indicates these additional pictures were likewise generated or edited Google AI.
Real Photo Posted but Fabrications Continued
The former US president shared the initial authentic image of Nicolás Maduro handcuffed aboard the USS Iwo Jima on Saturday morning. However, despite the authentic image was published, synthetic images continued to spread but were altered to incorporate the grey tracksuit worn by Maduro.
Digital forensics reveal these altered fabrications were first posted on the video platform by a digital art account. Once again, SynthID says these further images were generated or edited generative artificial intelligence.
