The UN Security Council voted in favour to a United States-backed measure ending penalties on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa ahead of his Washington trip the coming week.

He was appointed interim leader following his leadership in a revolutionary movement that drove out the previous leader in winter 2024, bringing to a close 13 years of internal conflict.

America's diplomat to the UN Mike Waltz stated the United Nations delivered "a powerful diplomatic message" that acknowledged Syria entered "a fresh chapter" since Assad was deposed.

He had been subject to United Nations restrictions while commanding the Islamist group HTS, once connected to the terrorist network. America delisted the organization from the catalog of foreign terror groups this past July.

More Penalties Removed

Additionally, the United Nations lifted penalties against the Syrian interior official the interior minister.

The Syrian diplomatic chief applauded the lifting of the penalties, declaring through digital channels: "Syrian officials convey thanks to the United States and supportive states for backing the country and its population."

Both presidents held discussions initially during May, when Trump visited Riyadh during a visit to the Middle East.

Following that encounter, the US president described him as a "resilient figure" possessing a "powerful background".

His Islamist group HTS served as al-Qaeda's branch within Syria prior to breaking relations during 2016.

Earlier American Trip

Monday's visit is not Sharaa's first trip to the United States in the current year. During September, he emerged as the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to address the United Nations gathering in New York in almost 60 years.

During his address, he said Syria was "restoring its proper position within the global community" while showing support with the people of Gaza.
